The maritime activities in the Arctic are increasing, and all forecasts indicate that this tendency will expand, as the extent of the ice decreases. This have required IMO to implement the Polar Code and a new requirement of training from the 1st of July 2018 as part of STCW.

“This tendency causes new demands for navigational safety awareness, when operating in these harsh, unpredictable and unknown waters. If accidents happen, you are far away from any emergency aid” says Jens Koch Kristensen, lead instructor of Ice Navigation training course at FURUNO Maritime Training. He continues: “Our training will give the navigator the fundamental competences required to navigate in polar waters”.

The STCW requirement for completion of appropriate Ice Navigation training covers all masters, chief officers and officers of a navigational watch onboard ships operating in polar waters.

“We have developed the content of the training course in close corporation with master mariners, who has more than 40 years of experience operating in polar waters” Jens explains. “This has given us solid knowledge and confidence when assuring the quality of the content”.

The duration of course is five days, where the participant for an example will get knowledge about various ice types, polar class ships and characteristics, ship-handling techniques, as well as the human factors affecting navigating performance. The participant will learn how to navigate and operate safely in the dynamic polar waters based on both theoretical lectures and practical training exercises in a full mission simulator.
