OIL Radar for Offshore and onshore installation


The FOIL-200 oil spill detection radar can be used in offshore and onshore with an existing X- band navigation radar. 

The oil spill can be marked with polygons and update these, whenever it is required. The user can also take screenshots from the display and record the raw radar video to the external hard disc or memory stick for future evaluation or training purposes.


Process and analyze the raw radar video

The FOIL-200 oil spill detection processor is connected to a standard FURUNO FAR-2xx7 X-band navigation radar. It utilizes the raw video from the FAR-2xx7 radar, which is processed and analyzed with a special high performance algorithm, and the oil spill picture is created with an integration of up to 100 radar antenna scans. 



Integrated OSD (Oil Spill Detection system)

The FOIL-200 can be part of an integrated oil spill detection and surveillance system which can be installed and operated either on board the vessel or in control center connected to fixed shore based sensor station

Using the integrated system the oil spill detection and recovery operations can be efficiently performed. Oil spill detections received from the oil radar can be rapidly verified with the workstation GUI integrating thermal camera and oil spill polygons to the same display

The system consists of following sub-systems 

  • Furuno radar system ( Furuno FAR-2xx7) 
  • Furuno Finland oil radar FOIL-200 
  • Thermal camera 
  • Stabilized cooled thermal camera 
  • (E.g. Controp QUAD-2 or DSP-1) 
  • Uncooled thermal camera (E.g. FLIR M-series) 
  • Furuno Finland Surveillance station FFSS-400 

All sub-systems are integrated together to establish efficient operation platform for oil spill detection and surveillance activities. Integrated oil spill detection system.

OSD System architecture

Furuno radar system raw video signals are connected to the oil radar processor FOIL-200 for advanced signal processing. The oil radar provides for the surveillance station FFSS-400 oil spill detection information (polygons).

 The surveillance station FFSS-400 is the integration platform of the system with visualization of the situational picture (Furuno radar and AIS targets) and control possibilities of the radar and thermal camera.

Thermal cameras

Stabilized cooled thermal cameras can be integrated in the system. Supported models are Controp QUAD-2 and DSP-1, which have been installed in several offshore patrol vessels and patrol boats. Other manufacturers’ models may be utilized upon request. Also uncooled lower cost FLIR M-series models may be used in the vessel systems. Thermal camera can be used to verify the oil spill detection received from the oil radar.



FFSS-400 Surveillance workstation

The Surveillance station FFSS-400 is the integration center of the system with following functionalities: 

  • efficient chart engine for official ENC charts 
  • radar integration with radar echoes display and control to track new ARPA targets 
  • situational picture creation with radar tracks,  AIS tracks, manual targets and external targets 
  • oil spill detections with detected polygons display 
  • camera direction and zoom sector display 
  • camera video display with camera control, manual and automatic tracking of selected target 
  • recording and playback functionalities with both workstation screenshots and camera video are separately recorded, as well as recorded screenshots and videos can be exported as encrypted files.
